Catnip-Nepeta cataria
Catnip has a well earned reputation for sending cats into states euphoria. Catnip, a member of the mint family, is a harmless “high” for felines. Although many cats will eat it, scientists say they’re reacting to the smell rather than the taste. Felines bite, chew, rub against, and roll in catnip to release the volatile oil trapped in the leaves. About 80% of adult cats react to this irresistible, intoxicating, analgesic soporific. The tendency to like or ignore catnip is inherited, and it’s true that some cats are immune to its influence.

Perfect year around windowsill plant, too!
In Chinese cooking, the flat leaves of garlic chives are often used the same way as we use regular chives in our cooking:., sprinkled over foods for extra fragrance and decoration. Garlic chives can be substituted by regular chives, but since regular chives have a weaker flavor, it is worthwhile to grow both so you will always have an ample supply of either one for what ever the recipe calls for.

Herniaria Green Carpet Plug Flat
A very tough perennial ground cover, this is an excellent choice for growing between flagstones, pavers, or growing as a lawn substitute. The tiny leaves create a dense evergreen carpet, becoming bronze-to-gold in winter. Very tiny green flowers. May need some periodic watering during periods of extreme drought. Often used as base fillers in beds and also used in formal carpet bedding schemes. Growth rate is moderate and is not invasive. Also known as Rupturewort.
Herniaria, Green Carpet
Almost as rugged as grass, this groundcover can take substantial foot traffic. It also has a deep growing tap root, so is very drought tolerant. One plant can spread up to 24″. It has been used as a lawn substitute in some areas. Many people never notice it flowering because the white blossoms are so tiny and have no petals. But the foliage remains attractive, turning a bronzy red in winter. It’s great in heavy foot traffic areas because without flowers, it doesn’t attract bees.
Excellent in rock gardens and between flagstones in pathways. Also attractive spilling over walls, out of hanging baskets, and containers. A great substitute for Creeping Thyme.
Another name for this plant is Rupturewort. Said by herbalists to be used for urinary problems, since it increases urea and sodium emission without increasing urine flow.

Holly, Winterberry, Afterglow
One of the best plants for fall and winter color.
Female plants produce bright red berries in profusion in early fall while leaves are still green and remain until mid-winter.
Berried stems often used in seasonal dried arrangements.
Likes acidic soil, will tolerate wet, swampy conditions.
Native to the northeastern United States.
Winterberry is dioecious, so both male and female plants are needed for fruit production.
Zone: 4-9
Height: 5-8 Feet
Spread: 5-8 Feet
Winterberry’s bright red berries provide color in winter after the leaves have fallen off. The plant grows in sun or partial shade and a rich, well- drained soil, although it tolerates swampy areas. The fruits are often eaten by birds. Also used at Christmas for decorations.
Use Jim Dandy as the male pollinator.
